DECEMBER 16th, 2005
In
just two weeks time I have attended two exciting and educational
seminars regarding emergency management. At this event, I was
part of an official FEMA training course; IS-700 Introduction to
National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) and the the National
Response Plan (NRP), which describes the new national standard for
Incident Command Systems (ICS) which is being adopted by Homeland
Security at all levels for all hazards. This interoperablility
system is designed so that emegency responders can respond quickly,
efficiently, with good organization, and with common communications
amonst other jurisidictions and other groups. I cannot begin to
tell about how well this system is laid out. I learned a lot from
this course and will use it to aid my emergency response whether as a
communications volunteer, or even a storm chaser.
Mr. James B. Anderson, II did a wonderful job teaching the
course, and I hope to take another course with him. He is the
Training Coordinator for READI (Response to Emergencies and Disasters
Institute) at The George Washington University in D.C.
After the class Fred, K3CSX and I went to Founder's Restaurant for some
excellent sandwiches. Afterwards we explored a little of Old Town
Alexandria, near the Torpedo Factory and King Street. Thankfully
the traffic returning home was better than morning traffic.
Below are some related links, also some pictures from the event.
I hope to supplement this course with other FEMA and ARRL emergency
management courses in the very near future. Look for more at my
website.
